I was amazed .
There are a few people I know who are into yoga. I always thought it was just a nice relaxing exercise that helped people relax. This is somewhat true. It was what else I found out in my research that absolutely blew me away. There is definitely good reason to believe that there is at least the possibility of a Christianity yoga conflict. I’m not one of those Christians who believes that everything that you do is bad if Jesus is not involved. However, if what I am into has possible spiritual consequences I will do my due diligence. There is more than one thing that amazed me. Perhaps two of the most mind blowing things were the amount of money the industry creates, and the amount of people involved. The demographic is eye-catching as well.
Spiritual Side –
Most of the time when attending church I hear alot of talk about how other religions are not true. Something usually gets said like Buddha can’t do it or Muhammad is not alive etc. The people in attendance usually let out a strong amen which usually means they are in agreement. One word that continuously pops up in yoga research is Hinduism. Hinduism is arguably the oldest religion on Earth. While I certainly am not an expert on Hinduism, it does not take a genius to figure out that it is not Christianity. Knocking what someone else believes in is not my motive here. A world where everyone was saved would be great. That’s not the way the world works though. The point being made here is that these are two different religions or beliefs and that’s not something our Lord taught us to be a part of. The reality of yoga is that its origins and teachings are bases on Hinduism beliefs. Yoga may be very relaxing, but it conflicts with Christianity and that is a fact. Then said Jesus unto him, get the hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.Matt4:10.
The percentage of people involved with yoga-
One of the most mind blowing realities I learned while researching this topic was the explosion of people involved with yoga from the early 80s until now. There were roughly about nine million or so people practicing yoga in the early 80s. Today there are almost 40 million people practicing it. A yoga businessman should be very happy. That number is almost certainly guaranteed to grow. The thing that really gets me is wondering just how many of those people are supposed to be born again believers. Even if it was only half that number, then 20 million people would be practicing Christianity and Hinduism at the same time. You should probably know that all the numbers given above are only referring to the United States of America. The number of people practicing yoga around the world could be even higher than 300 million. Again I am not here to knock what works for 300 million people. This is simply a few facts I feel the Lord our God would like to make you aware of. No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye can not serve God and mammon. Luke 16:13.
Let’s Talk Money-
As of right now the American yoga industry accounts for over 10 billion dollars a year. This sounds like an incredible investment opportunity to me. Imagine how much it accounts for worldwide. These numbers are staggering. Four private 30 minute yoga sessions can run you about as much as two hundred dollars. Alot of the prices go up and down depending on what area you stay in. I can just picture some yoga addicted person dishing out about eight hundred a month for private sessions. This is a great opportunity to remind you that the charge of a private or public Jesus session is zero dollars. Some people probably would argue that they don’t mind spending the money because Jesus does not work for them. That is a reasonable argument. Try spending as much time and money in the name of Jesus as you do in yoga and you will probably change your mind. A beginners kit for a yoga student cost about twenty-six dollars. A beginners kit for Jesus cost zero dollars. The yoga mat you need when you go to your session will run you about ten dollars. The seat at church or wherever you decide to worship is free of charge. A walk in student at a yoga class will pay between twelve and fifteen dollars. Walk into any church or worship service absolutely free. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils:freely ye have received, freely give. Matt 10:8.
The demographic was very interesting to me as well. The majority of people who are involved with yoga make over 70,000 dollars a year. Study shows that the majority of people who regularly practice yoga have a college degree. I couldn’t help but wonder how many of those people prayed to the Lord for their opportunity. When they got blessed they must have decided God was no longer enough for what they needed. Come unto me all, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matt 11:28.
Many of us while we are believing in God to change our lives for the better do everything we need in order for him to bless us. After we have received the blessing we run off and seek other things to satisfy us. I personally believe the Lord is all we need. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for the: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2nd Corinthians 12:9. The amount of people age 65 and over is proven to be the biggest age group not represented as much in yoga participation. One has to believe and hope that they are probably set on what has gotten them thru all those years.
This is not an attempt to crush any positive energy you get from participating in yoga. I hope that my brothers and sisters out there who are born again believers will atleast give the possible Christianity and yoga conflict some thought. God has been so good to us. When we did not see a way he made one. While our bodies failed us he healed us. While our families were broken he fixed them. While we were worried to death he gave us perfect peace. The list goes on and on. What if Jesus favored our bad situations and problems more than us? What if he blessed our enemies to keep doing us wrong while giving us a little time now and then?
